3 Celebrity Couples Who’ve Split During COVID-19 And What We Can Learn From Them

On Behalf of | Jun 21, 2020 | Divorce, Latest News

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed all of our lives in very concrete ways, and for some, the stress of quarantine has been enough to break apart marriages. No one is immune to marital issues, and celebrities are no exception. Quite a few ‘it couples’ have called it quits this year, thanks in no small part to the unprecedented times we now live in. Here are 3 couples who have split during the COVID quarantine, and what we can stand to learn from them.

902-Uh Oh

Beverly Hills 90210 star, Brian Austin Green, split with his movie star wife, Megan Fox, this year after 10 years of marriage. Despite the split, the couple remains amicable, as Green said on his podcast: “I will always love her… and I know she will always love me and I know as far as a family what we have built is really cool and really special.”

Green and Fox’s split goes to show that although it is a big life change, divorce does not necessitate the end of a family. The two share three children and clearly still consider one another as valuable members of the family they have created.

Break(ing) Away

Kelly Clarkson has split from her husband of seven years, Brandon Blackstock, after doing everything she could to make it work. The two had been attempting to work things out for months, but ultimately the stress of quarantine made things worse instead of better. Clarkson realized that divorce was her only option.

Clarkson’s story shows us that divorce is not a failure, and it doesn’t mean you didn’t try. If you know it’s time to call it quits, having the strength to do so before a situation gets worse is a sign of strength, and for children of that marriage, seeing their parents happily separated instead of unhappily married is ultimately healthier for them in the long run.

Hart-Break

In perhaps the saddest story on this list, Hart of Dixie star Jaime King has filed for divorce from her husband Kyle Newman, citing his emotional manipulation and aggression. King also got a restraining order against Newman, who was using their children as leverage in an attempt to get her to fire her divorce attorney. Newman refused to let King see the children while they were quarantined in different cities. She also filed for emergency protection for the kids.

King’s experiences are far too common – children should never be used as a playing card in a separation. You should remember that you have legal options beyond divorce, like King’s restraining order, if your partner is making you feel unsafe.

Has COVID-19 Impacted Your Marriage?

While being quarantined together may be the “straw that broke the camel’s back” in these relationships, other underlying factors are likely to have existed before. The added stress of being in a global pandemic only exacerbates a couple’s issues, bringing them to the forefront of their life. But under lockdown, you can’t escape those problems. COVID-19 is making and breaking marriages, stripping our lives of everything outside of our relationships. For some, that will strengthen an already strong bond, but for many others, it will unearth buried problems and hidden issues.
