San Diego, CA – It is wise to hire an attorney to represent you during your divorce. But how can you know that the divorce attorney you’ve hired is qualified and capable of helping you get the best settlement?

When wading through the numerous attorneys available, it’s in your best interest to seek out an attorney who is a California Certified Family Law Specialist. Also known as a CFLS, this designation shows a commitment to success and you’ll know you’ve hired an attorney with the experience you need.

“Becoming a CFLS isn’t an easy process,” says Vista family law attorney and CFLS John Griffith. “The decision of who represents you during your divorce or child custody case can have an impact on the rest of your life, so it’s important that you don’t settle for anything but the best. This certification proves just that.”

In order to gain the certification as a Family Law Specialist, an attorney must fulfill several requirements. An attorney must:

  • Be an active member of the State Bar of California.
  • Have been engaged primarily in the practice of family law for the past 5 years.
  • Pass a detailed written examination. This is a full day bar exam testing the attorney’s knowledge of statutes and case law.
  • Demonstrate an expert level of courtroom experience.
  • Complete a minimum level of continuing legal education.
  • Obtain written recommendations from family law judges and other family law attorneys.

An attorney in California can refer to himself as a specialist only after being certified by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.

The written examination is much like the one-day bar examination, however, it covers just family law topics.

After the written exam is passed and the attorney has become certified, he or she must continue to fulfil ongoing education requirements and be favorably evaluated by other attorneys and judges who are familiar with the work.

The process to become certified is a rigorous one that requires much time and effort on the part of the attorney. But when you are looking for an attorney to represent you, it’s important to choose one who isn’t afraid of hard work, and who you know is dedicated and committed to providing the best representation possible.

There are close to 200,000 attorneys in the state of California, but there are only about 1,100 who are certified family law specialists.

When you hire a CFLS, you can be assured that the attorney has demonstrated considerable knowledge and experience in all family law matters, including child custody and visitation, spousal support/alimony, child support, and property division. You can also be sure that your attorney has experience in the courtroom in all areas of family law practice.

While selecting the right divorce attorney to represent you can be tough, the certified family law specialist designation offers the assurance you need to know that the attorney you’ve chosen is an expert in the field of family law. When you see the CFLS designation, you’ll know the attorney is well-qualified to represent you because he or she is better trained and more experienced than a non-certified attorney.

“Certification in law can be compared to medical certification,” says Griffith. “You wouldn’t want your general practitioner performing heart surgery. So when you are going through a divorce, you want to know that someone with the experience you need is representing you. That’s exactly what the CFLS certification proves.”
